Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
Verdict: B
I am a fairly recent Jane Austen convert, having read Pride and Prejudice for the first time just about two years ago. I was honestly prepared to hate it being, at the time, a science fiction only type. I listened to it on audiobook and really enjoyed the character development and witty dialog. When I first found about about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I knew I had to read it.
After reading it, I’m a bit torn. I loved the random interjections of zombies but I found the interweaving of zombies not quite as tight as it could have been.
I also didn’t always love the non-zombie related changes made to the characters (SPOILER: George Wickham, for example, ends up bed-ridden by Mr. Darcy. While I didn’t love Wickham as a person/character, I didn’t think this was necessary to the zombie-plot additions. Furthermore, I didn’t like the brutal light in which it cast Mr. Darcy. END SPOILER). The zombie additions also seemed to temper some of the cleverness of Austen’s original work–replacing a entertaining exchange between characters with a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fight scene.
All in all, I’m glad I read this book and I’d recommend it to someone else who liked the original work; however, I am left with the overwhelming desire to reread the original to gain back some of the cleverness of the original characters and plot.
Audiobook Details
The narrator, Katherine Kellgren, had the proper aristocratic British voice for Pride and Prejudice and did a good job incorporating the moaning of the zombie additions. I have no doubt this was a difficult book to narrate and she did an excellent job.
Run time: 11 hours, 9 minutes.
