I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book in a GoodReads giveaway. I was prepared to dislike the book since I had prejudged it to be another teen agnst type Twilight book. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I read this book quickly (which is something for me given my limited reading time) and really enjoyed the experience of a quick page-turner.
There are a lot of themes in this book that felt familiar from other books but, honestly, it all worked well together and managed to feel fresh. The ending was satisfying and left the door open for a sequel that isn’t limited by the plot of the first book, which I heartily appreciate.
My main criticism of the book has two aspects. First, there is a bit of a feeling of product placement in the book. I appreciate the desire to include references to pop culture but it felt unnecessary to repeatedly name the brand of cell phone being used or what was on tv in the background of a scene. Second, I am afraid this may significantly limit the lifespan of this book to just a few years; pop culture moves on quickly and this book could quickly feel very dated and stale because of the technology and brands referenced.
In the end, I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, enjoyable read that doesn’t require any work on the reader’s part. It isn’t going to be a classic but it is a good story with a interesting lore all its own. I’m interested to read the sequel, Blue Moon, but the mixed reviews for the newly released third book, Shadowland, are leaving me a little frightened.
